Colour blindness is an inability to differentiate between different colours. Most common is red-green colorblindness. It occurs in 8% of Male and 0.4% Female. Colour blindness is usually a genetic, hereditary condition, you are born with it. Red, green and blue colour blindness is usually passed down from mother to son on the 23rd chromosome, which is the sex chromosome.

Color blindness is a disorder characterized by the inability to distinguish colors. The term ‘color blindness’ is commonly used but it is a misleading term that implies total loss of color vision. In most cases the defect is only partial. It is more appropriate to call it as ‘color vision deficiency’.
Color Blindness is not a disease, it is a genetic disorder. They have difficulty with the contrast of colors. Each plate in Ishihara Test Chart Book has different shades of only two colors RED and GREEN . Color vision deficiencies have either autosomal or X-linked inheritance. The inheritance of red-green defects are also X-linked, blue-yellow defects are autosomal dominant and achromatopsia autosomal recessive. Congenital color vision defects are not associated with any pathology and patients do not have any signs and symptoms. The severity and type of deficiency is always the same in both the eyes.
Complementary colors are pair of colors which when combined cancels each other out.
Ranging from 380nm to 740nm wavelength is visible to human eye. So if we observe the color wavelengths we would know that Red has a wavelength from 780 to 622 nm, Orange has a wavelength from 622 to 597 nm, Yellow has a wavelength ranging between 597 to 577 nm, Green having a wavelength from 577 to 492 nm, Blue ranging from 492 to 455 nm and Violet ranging from 455 to 390 nm. The human eye can perceive more variations in warmer colors than cooler ones. This is because almost 2/3 of the cones process the longer light wavelengths (reds, oranges and yellows). The maximum efficiency is 683 lumens /Watt at a wavelength of 555 nm (green).The wavelengths for when a person is in photopic vary with the intensity of light.

On an average out of every 10 person 1 is a color blind man. Not all the people have color discrimination in their day to day life but they happen to know about their defect once they go for Ishihara test for color blindness.
No true cause is known till date. We call it as a hereditary disorder as because it is carried on from one generation to the other. Many a times the person having color deficiency has no family history. Also at times it is seen that a man with color defect has children with normal color perception. Color blindness has a relation with the cone cells present in the retina. People usually have three types of cone cells in the eye. Each type senses red, green, or blue light. You see color when your cone cells sense different amounts of these three basic colors. And any defect in the cone cells lead to color vision defect.
Some people have difficulty in differentiating between reds and green, some people have difficulty in discriminating in between different shades of red and green. Rarely anyone sees only black, white, and gray. In so many years of seeing color deficient people I have never seen any color blind person seeing things as black, white and gray. Even total color blinds are able to see colors in their day to day life but are unable to read any page in Ishihara test plates.
Ewald Hering (1834-1918) devised the first accurate theory of color vision. We perceive color just as we perceive taste. For food we have four attributes like sweet, salty, sour and bitter similarly for color we have 3 attributes red/green, yellow or blue and brightness. Color nerves sense green or red — but never both; and blue or yellow — but never both. Ewald Hering’s color chart show how all colors arise from a combination of green-or-red, blue-or-yellow and brightness. He was the one who devised the first accurate theory of color vision. He theorized the “opponent” nature of green/red and blue/yellow. Hering expanded on the ideas of Goethe and Schoepenauer.
The human eye and brain together translate light into color. Light receptors within the eye transmit messages to the brain, which produces the familiar sensations of color. Newton observed that color is not inherent in objects. Rather, the surface of an object reflects some colors and absorbs all the others. We perceive only the reflected colors.
When different light wavelengths enter the eye, they are picked up by rods and cones and translated into chemical impulses. These impulses travel through the optic nerve into the brain. In our brain these impulses are assembled and organized on the basis of their pattern like images, movement and color.
In our eye there are 6 million cones as compared to rods which are 120 million. The retina contains three different types of color receptor cells or cones. They are: S cones – short wavelength cones or blue cones, 2% of the cone cells are for blue color, which are more sensitive to light and are perceived as blue, lack of the S cone photo pigment leads to Tritanopia. L cones – long wavelength cones or red cones, 64% of the cones cells are for red color, which are more sensitive to light and are perceived as red, and lack of the L cone photo pigment leads to Protanopia. M cones – middle wavelength cones or green cones, 32% of the cone cells are for green color, which are more sensitive to light and are perceived as green. Lack of the M cone photo pigment leads to Deutanopia . Cones lie in the centre of our retina and are essential for central, clear, crisp, colored, fine detailed vision with “High Resolution”. Cones are also less light-sensitive than rods and therefore functions best in bright light.
RYB (Red, yellow and blue are primary colors) and RGB (red, green, and blue) refers to a system for representing the colors to be used on a computer display. Our full-spectrum color vision is produced by mixing just three colors. Red, green, and blue can be combined in various proportions to obtain millions of color in the visible spectrum by changing the levels of Red, Green and Blue.
Color Deficiency or Colorblindness occurs when cones are damaged or if they don't function properly. Women are said to be good in matching the colors and shopping for dresses for themselves and also for men essentially because amongst the total men population around 8% of men are color blind, whereas only .5% of women population has color defect.
Dr. Shinobu Ishihara from Japan produced three different test sets which are widely used and which all based on the same pseudoisochromatic plates. The Isihara Test is a set of 38 different patterns and is used to determine if impaired cones are causing a color vision deficiency. People who have healthy cones and also have full-spectrum vision will be able to tell the number in the image but all those who are colorblind will only see a circle full of dots. They will not be able to identify the numbers written.
Yes in cases of ARMD color vision might get affected. Damage to cones can diminish visual acuity. In case of Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) rods and cones deteriorate and die off. Lack of nutrition to the cone cells diminishes its ability to have clean, clear, crisp, sharp color vision. Also there is accumulation of waste matters and delayed clearing of the waste products from the cone cells which further damages the cones and accelerates their deterioration. Eventually vision loss occurs.
Color blindness is a wrong term, it is only deficiency. Basically so called color blind people can see colors, it’s not that they can’t see colors but yes they have problem in discriminating between similar shades of colors. But usually these people don’t address any problem in their day to day life, it’s just that when they are shown Ishihara test chart they find it impossible to read the numbers written on it. If you look at the Ishihara plate closely you will find that there are colorful dots in each page and the dots are so arranged that close by wavelength of color dots are placed in a row to confuse the brain. So the people with impaired or defective cone cells find it challenging to tell the number. Initial challenge in the treatment is we want to show a color deficient person what he is not seeing, I mean we are dealing with perception, so first question arises that unless a man can see what he is not seeing he won’t understand what he needs to see.
Let’s make it more simple, say I am telling apple is red and red is this. How will you a colorblind understand red is this, this is red color unless he is able to see it. So, at first we screen the patient and once the test is over according to our findings we give them a particular filter and first show him what he is not seeing. By this trial we come to know at the end of the treatment how well he would see with his own eyes unaided also the patients becomes happy to read the plates in just 2 minutes. After the test with filters we give them a “Color vision - Take Home Treatment” depending on their findings the treatment lasts from 40 days to 6 months. “Color vision - Take Home Treatment” is designed by keeping the requirement and scenario of the affected group.
All the people who are suffering from color deficiency are either students or working people, so for either of them it is not possible to stay at the centre for such a long duration of treatment.
